Unglazed earthenware painted with a figurative motif – two men in classical dress standing before a grey-haired, bare-chested bearded old man – Socrates (?).

From the 1870s, the Copenhagen pottery workshop of P. Ipsen Enke was among the leading producers of European Classical-style ceramics, exhibiting its large collection of amphora-shaped vases painted with classical figure groups at the Exposition Universelle of 1878 in Paris.

Vase purchased by museum director and architect Josef Škorpil at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 in Paris.
